Reply to Bishop Don Mearles on Tithing, You Tube 3-18-18
In
18 years of evaluating sermons on tithing, this is the worst. The speaker reeks
of arrogance and mean-heartedness. (1) He ignores the biblical definition of
holy tithes as only food from inside Israel. (2) He reads Malachi 3:10 and ignores
its definition of tithes as only food. (3) He ignores the fact that Abram’s
tithe was from pagan spoils of war. (4) He said that priests tithed and gives
no text; in Numb 18:25-28 priests did not tithe. (5) He defines tithes as the
first 10% and says bible dictionaries agree; wrong, wrong. (6) He says Jesus would
not rebuke tithers if He did not tithe; wrong, Jesus was a carpenter and neither
a farmer or herdsman in Israel. (7) He uses the word “sacrilege”; Yet, he
steals by not being a Levite or Aaronic priest, by owning property and by
amassing wealth contrary to Numbers 18:20. (8) He says “Show me where I am wrong”;
I invite him to an open public debate using email. (9) He says tithes must be the
first tenth; it is impossible for a farmer to tithe his first tenth until after
the full harvest can be measured. (10) He says to add 20% if the tithe was
missed; that was only true if the original tither wanted to make a substitution
(Lev 27:30-34). Pastors like this give Christianity
a bad reputation.
