TWO SCOURGING THEORY

……..………………………..PRIESTS CONSPIRE TO KILL………………………
Mt 27:1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
Mk 15:1a And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus ….

 ……………………………………………....TO PILATE………………………………………….
Mt 27:2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
Mk 15:1b …. and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
Lk 23:1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.
Jn 18:28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

…………………………………..PILATE ASKS FOR AN ACCUSATION……………………
Jn 18:29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

..……………………………………CHIEF PRIESTS ACCUSE JESUS………………………………
Jn 18:30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
Lk 23:2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

………………………………………….JUDGE HIM YOURSELVES…………………
Jn 18:31a Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law.,,,

…………………..…………IT IS NOT LAWFUL FOR US TO KILL………….
Jn 18:31b … The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
Jn 18:32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

..........……………………….PILATE: ARE YOU THE KING OF THE JEWS?..........….
Mt 27:11a And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews?
Mk 15:2a And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? …
Lk 23:3a And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? …
Jn 18:33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

……………………….……….JESUS ASKS PILATE IF HIS OPINION………………..
Jn 18:34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

………………………………….PILATE: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?...................
Jn 18:35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

….…………………………MY KINGDOM IS NOT OF THIS WORLD………….
Jn 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

…………….………………………ARE YOU A KING?..................................
Jn 18:37a Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? …

…………….……..I CAME INTO THE WORLD TO BE A KING…………
Mt 27:11b … And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.
Mk 15:2b… And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it.
Lk 23:3b … And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it
Jn 18:37b … Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

……………………….WHAT IS TRUTH? FIND NO FAULT……………………..
John 18:38b … Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

………………………..I FIND NO FAULT IN HIM……………………………..
Lk 23:4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.

……………………..PRIESTS ACCUSE: JESUS IS SILENT………………………..
Mt 27:12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
Mk 15:3 And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.

……..………..……..WHY DON’T YOU ANSWER? MARVELS…………………….
Mt 27:13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
Mt 27:14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
Mk 15:4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.
Mk 15:5 But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.

………………..……………ACCUSED OF SEDITION; GALILEE; TO HEROD……………………..
Lk 23:5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
Lk 23:6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilean.
Lk 23:7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

………………………………………..BEFORE HEROD……………………………….
Lk 23:8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.
Lk 23:9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.
Lk 23:10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.
Lk 23:11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.
Lk 23:12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.

………………. 2ND TIME BEFORE PILATE; NO FAULT; CHASTISE  ……………………
Lk 23:13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
Lk 23:14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:
Lk 23:15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.
Lk 23:16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

……………………………. CUSTOM TO RELEASE A PRISONER…………………….
Mt 27:15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.
Mt 27:16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
Mk 15:6 Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.
Mk 15: 7 And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.
Mk 15:8 And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.
Jn 18:39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
Jn 18:40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

……………….………………PILATE: SHOULD I RELEASE JESUS?..........................
Mt 27:17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
Mt 27:18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
Mk 15:9 But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
Mk 15:10 For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.

……..………………………………PILATE’S WIFE WARNS HIM…………………………….
Mt 27:19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

…………….………………………WHOM SHALL I RELEASE?.........................
Mt 27:21a The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you?

…….…..………………..RELEASE BARABBAS; DESTROY JESUS……………………………..
Mt 27:20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
Mt 27:21b … They said, Barabbas.
Mk 15:11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.
Lk 23:18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:
Lk 23:19 (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)

……………………………………WILLING TO RELEASE JESUS………………………………
Lk 23:20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.

…………………………………..WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH JESUS? …………….……………..
Mt 27:22a Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?
Mk 15:12 And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?

..…………………………………..CRUCIFY HIM………………………………………….
Mt 27:22b … They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
Mk 15:13 And they cried out again, Crucify him.
Lk 23:21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

…….………………..WHY? NO CAUSE OF DEATH. CHASTISE AND REALEASE ........
Mt 27:23a And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done?
Mk 15:14a Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done?
Lk 23:22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.

[INSERT JOHN 19:1-15 FOR 2-SCOURGE THEORY]
Three times in Luke 23:16, 20 and 22 Pilate wanted to chastise Jesus to appease the crowd and release Him. If a first lighter scourging before a few soldiers was given to appease the crowd before final sentence was given, it explains why Pilate was still trying to find a way out for Jesus before the final sentence. It is difficult for me to believe that the events of John 19:4-15 occurred AFTER a full-fledged final scourging in 19:1. The soldiers would have repeated the mocking ceremony during both beatings and Jesus would hardly have been able to carry on the conversation found in John 19:8-11 following a full-fledged scourging. Therefore, John 19:1-15 better fits between Matthew 27:23a and 23b. This is not unusual for the Gospels: Jesus before Annas in John 18:13-23 is not found elsewhere. Neither Luke nor John cover Caiaphas’ first night trial from Matthew 26:57 to 26:68. Only Luke covers Herod’s trial in 23:5-12. The Roman tomb-guard is only found in Matthew 27:62-66. And Jesus’ appearances to Mary are only found in John 20:11-17.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

…………………………..FIRST SCOURAING TO APPEASE…………………………
Jn 19:1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

……………………………..SOLDIERS MOCK JESUS……………………………………
Jn 19:2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
Jn 19:3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
Jn 19:4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
Jn 19:5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

……………………………………CRUCIFY HIM, CRUCIFY HIM…………………………….
Jn 19:6a When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them …

……………………………………YOU CRUCIFY HIM; I FIND NO FAULT……………………
Jn 19:6b … Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
[Note: Although it was illegal for Jews to kill lawbreakers while a Roman ruler was in place, Pilate gave permission for this exception.]

………………………..OUR LAW SAYS HE SHOULD DIE; SON OF GOD…………….
Jn 19:7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

…………………………………….WHENCE ART THOU?............................
Jn 19:8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
Jn 19:9A And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou?]

……………………………………..JESUS GAVE HIM NO ANSWER………………………………
Jn 19:9b … but Jesus gave him no answer.

…………………………………….I HAVE POWER TO KILL YOU…………………………….
Jn 19:10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

……………………………………ALL POWER IS FROM GOD……………………………….
Jn 19:11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

.………………………….PILATE SOUGHT TO RELEASE IM………………………………………
Jn 19:12a And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him …
[Note: This is a weak point in the one-scourge theory because it comes after Pilate had sentenced Jesus to death and after His full-scouraging.]

…………………………..YOU ARE NOT CAESAR’S FRIEND………………………………………
Jn 19:12b … but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

…………………………. PILATE BRINGS JESUS FOR SENTENCING…………………………..
Jn 19:13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
Jn 19:14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
[Note: Although John does not state it, the purpose of this location is to sentence.]

………………………………. WE HAVE NO KING BUT CAESAR……………………………….
Jn 19:15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priest answered, We have no king but Caesar.

……………………………………CRUCIFY PREVAILED………………….
Mt 27:23b … But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
Mk 15:14b … And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.
Lk 23:23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.

……. ……………………………PILATE WASHES HANDS…………………………………
Mt 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

………..……………………….HIS BLOOD BE ON US AND OUR CHILDREN…………………
Mt 27:25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

……..………………………………PILATE SENTENCES JESUS………E………………………..
Lk 23:24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

………..…………………………PILATE RELEASES BARABBAS………………………………….
Mt 27:26a Then released he Barabbas unto them:
Mk 15:15a And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them …
Lk 23:25a And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired …

…….……………………..PILATE SCOURGES AND DELIEVERS JESUS ………………….
Mt 27:26b … and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
MK 15:15b … and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.
Lk 23:25b … but he delivered Jesus to their will.
[Note: This is where the one-scourge theory begins John 19:1-16. It has Pilate wanting to release Jesus even after pronouncing the sentence. It also has Jesus answering Pilate’s questions after receiving a full-scouraging.]

………….………………………………SOLDIERS MOCK JESUS……………………………
Mt 27:27) Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
Mt 27:28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
Mt 27:29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
Mt 27:30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
Mk 15:16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.
Mk 15:17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,
Mk 15:18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
Mk 15:19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

[Note: This is where the one-scourge theory places John 19:2-6a. However, it would be reasonable to assume that the mocking ceremony was repeated.]
[Note: This is where the one-scourge theory places John 19:6b where Pilate tells the Jews to “Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.” A Roman judge would never do this after he had already pronounced a guilty sentence.]
[Note: This is also where the one-scourge theory places John 19:12a which states that “Pilate sought to release him.” This is not possible after the guilty sentence had been decreed and must have occurred prior to it.]
[Note: This is where the one-scourge theory places John 19:12b “If you let this man go, thou are not Caesar’s friend.” The location of this statement only makes sense prior to the guilty sentence being decreed; it has no purpose afterwards.]
[Note: This is where the one-scourge theory places John 19:13-14 when Pilate sits in the judgment seat to pronounce the guilty sentence. This sequence makes no sense because it follows Jesus’ full-scourging for being guilty.

………………..…………………………..CRUCIFIXION………………………………………….
Mt 27:31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
Mk 15:20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.
Jn 19:16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
[Note: According to the 2-scourge theory, this is when the final full scourging occurred before all of the soldiers.]
Jn 19:17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha.
