I wouldn't call myself a tithing opponent (though I understand what you mean by the label), because I often tell people I'm delighted if they give 10% of their income to the Lord's work since the national average for Christians is below 2% and for evangelicals is barely 3%! It's just that I don't see Scripture mandating the tithe for Christians. Indeed, the problem for the small number of believers who DO tithe is that they often feel that fulfills their stewardship obligation rather than recognizing that God requires attention to how we spend 100% of our income--and for the middle class and above that may often also mean giving MORE than 10% to the church and other Christian ministry.
